imo its more of a question - as with the american example - of legislation.
danish civil court has a legal concept called "bonus pater", basically a common sense law, meaning that for LARPers who are fully aware of what we're venturing out to do, then we cant get sued if some twat doesn't like me whacking him ovor the head with a double-axe of +5 doom.
dunno if italian courts have a similar concept - but its the lack of that which prevents american LARPers from using latex weapons on the scale we do, as well as forcing them to pad their weapons and armor to a rediculous extent
Here you can use latex weapons and real armours (such as, AFAIK, in Germany, where they use harder weapons than Italian ones). In some clubs wooden(!) weapons are used...
Generally, when you enter a LARP club or association, you sign a document similar to Danish "bonus pater". And association (and sometimes player) sign an insurance.

but ok cool - i know places that play rougher and such too. i use real steel plate armor myself (check my gallery, i got sweet sweet homemade armor)
